My uncle, John B. MacHale, left the USMC in order to join the RCAF, I believe in early 1942. He became a Lancaster pilot and flew missions during the war. He elected to stay in the USMC rather than transfer to the USAAF.
Following the war he flew commercially until 1968, when he became ill with cancer. He died in Seattle, WA in July, 1969.
