There is an interesting account of a visit to the wreck by members of the Pacific Islands Battalion on 31 May 42 in "The War Diaries of Eddie Allan Stanton" (Allen and Unwin 1996). They found the overturned wreck in a swamp and salvaged some equipment. Only a few traces of the pilot and co-pilot could be found in a decomposed state. They believed that the men had been thrown through the window on impact and were buried under the nose of the plane. This was 3.5 miles from Okaiaula and was a difficult journey.
