I was on the advanced echelon to Owi and helped set up the camp there. Being first on the island we got beachfront property with a wooden floor, courtesy of the Seabees and a bottle of scotch. I got on flying status after nearly a year as a radio operator and mechanic on the ground. I went for 39 missions after that. Charles Lindbergh was on the island at the same time and has a description of his experiences there in his memoirs. He tells about the night we had a lone Jap bomber drop some daisy cutters on the 22nd area and how we all watched the tracers as a night fighter shot him down.
